Friday check in: GIVEAWAY WINNER! and design considerations from With Strings Attached

I thank everyone who took time to comment on Monday's Hands2Help blog hop post.  It was inspiring to read all the stories about the ways that quilters use their passion to enrich people's lives.

I used a random number generator to pick the giveaway winner:  KAWeed  (Though her post came as "anonymous" she included her email, per the giveaway qualifications.)

In the studio:  the pinwheels and square-in-squares are on the design wall.  The units are 4-1/2" unfinished.

The pattern (Gerri Robinson in McCall's Quilting) is a straight set.

I tried on-point.  I cut setting triangles and ...

Friday check in: blogging friends and a workshop from With Strings Attached

The Northern Lake County Quilters Guild hosted Lynn Dykstra who is familiar to many quiltmakers from her blog Klein Meisje Quilts.  Lynn presented a trunk show at the Wednesday evening meeting and gave a workshop on Thursday.

I've admired Lynn's work since I began reading her blog way back when she and Bonnie Hunter were among the "Quilt Mavericks."

Two members of the McHenry County quilt guild came to sell tickets for their annual raffle.  One of them was Sue Daurio, who blogs at Sue Daurio's Quilting Adventures.  We've been meaning to meet up for several ...

Friday check in: a finish! from With Strings Attached

A finish -- how appropriate for Finished or Not Friday -- and colorful for  Peacock Party

I made the flimsy last summer, inspired by a photo of a similar quilt on a FB group.  Blocks are 5" finished.  The quilt is 71 x 81.

The back is all-the-same this time, no orphans or miscellaneous pieces, so no photo.
I used the walking foot and the serpentine stitch to quilt parallel lines through the blocks.

P.S.  I have no shortage of homespuns.  Confession:  I've recently bought a few more yards in brighter colors.

Friday check in: finished! from With Strings Attached

I finished the daisy wall hanging.  I adapted a design from a pattern in the National Quilting Assn. magazine.  20" x 20".

It will be presented to the outgoing president of the P.E.O. Lake County  Round Table in appreciation for her six years in office.  The P.E.O. flower is the marguerite, or daisy, and there were seven founders.

I've made crumb-pieced backgrounds for several projects and I like the effect.

This is one of my OMGs for February.

Linking up with  Alycia's Finished or Not Friday  and Wendy's Peacock Party  and Sarah's ...

Friday check in: blue and white finished plus OMG for January from With Strings Attached

I surprised myself!  The blue and white blanket weave quilt is quilted and bound.  On Wednesday I wrote that I had to trim quite a bit to even up the sides.  I had to do more trimming when the quilting was finished.

The large floral print on the back was a gift from our dear Magpie Celia's stash.  (Her daughter sent each of us a box.)

5-3/8 yards for this project.

Friday check in: birthday week, mini in the mail, and a finish! from With Strings Attached

Look who began a "prime" year on Wednesday.   The Facebook post with this photo garnered 139 "likes" and 94 comments to his surprise and gratification.   (I gave him three new pairs of his preferred suspenders and a large-screen clock/calendar, not-so-tactfully described as a "dementia clock" on the Amazon listing.)

Earlier this month I made this spiral quilt and wrote that I'd like to try the concept with other blocks.  Now I have! It's my entry for the 2023 MQG Mini Swap. I mailed it to my swap partner earlier this week.

Though the swap instructions said 24 ...

Friday check in: flinging, finishes, and a flimsy from With Strings Attached

Vintage Fiesta and vintage tablecoth
Sunrise 12/28

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were very cold but clear.   On Christmas Day we had time for presents and a festive breakfast (pancakes, bacon, and eggs) before the Sunday service for which I was liturgist.   Our Christmas dinner was at regular suppertime:  roast beef, parsnips, Brussels sprouts, popovers.   We watched several PBS/Netflix Mary Berry cooking shows where she made turkey. British friends said that nowadays turkey is for Christmas since they don't have our Thanksgiving holiday.  I'll stick to the old-fashioned menu.  (Especially since we still have leftover turkey ...

Friday check in: brrrr! and yet another flimsy! from With Strings Attached

It's cold and windy this morning -- temp is -4 and wind chill makes it -28, but the sun is shining.  We had only 2" of snow out of the storm.  (We lived in Maine and in North Dakota. We can get through this!)   I've run all the errands so we'll stay inside today.

I was taken by one of Cathy K's quilts -- see  this post -- and had to give it a try.  I did it jelly-roll-race style by sewing the black/white/gray strips, adding a brightly colored patch, and repeating. When I had sewn a ...

Friday check in: two more! from With Strings Attached

Here are #7 and #8 in the wheelchair series.

The pinwheels were my 2019 RSC block.  I had 73 remaining from the original 365.  (Full disclosure:  I had to make a few more to get the colors I wanted for this design.)

The four-patch blocks are 4.5" unfinished.  I had a small stack of "four-patch same" meaning four-patches made of two pairs of squares (as opposed "four-patch different" with four different fabrics).

And flimsy #9 is in progress!

P.S.  Also in progress:  the new flooring in the three bedrooms!  One room was finished yesterday.  Today the carpenter is ...

Friday check in: heavens, it's blue + stash report + OMG December from With Strings Attached

A quick check in post today.

We revisited Sedge Meadow along the Des Plaines River on Tuesday afternoon.

Right: interesting fungus, busy beavers.

This is a phenomenon called witch's broom. Wikipedia says it is “a deformity in a woody plant, typically a tree, when the natural structure is change. A dense mass of shoots grows from a single point, with the resulting structure resembling a broom…It is sometimes caused by pathogens.” I’ve only seen it in this forest preserve on the river willows.

Friday check in: so much to be thankful for + a finish + OMG from With Strings Attached

Four days of mild weather (as high as 58) and sunshine = four afternoon walks. We'll have another this afternoon.

(Three forest preserves -- Rollins Savanna, Lyons Woods, Van Patten Woods -- and Hosah Park along the lakefront.)

The path really rocked on Thanksgiving Day.  Once I started seeing the painted stones I kept seeing them -- 18. There were probably a few that I missed.

We enjoyed our traditional favorites at our just-us dinner.    The pie is made from the Halloween pumpkins.  The cranberry relish is Mama Stamberg's from NPR.   It's an acquired taste that we acquired long ago.

Friday check in: a finish and a surprise from With Strings Attached

Ladder Stars is quilted and bound.

On Monday I wrote that I used the last of a large floral chintz. Well, not quite the last -- there's some more of it here. (Now the truly-almost-the-last are a few scraps in the bin.)

The surprise is under the needle.  These are the sixteen-patches made from scraps from Patchwork Fields (again, see Monday's post).

Linking up with other quilters on this blustery gray day.  Finished or Not Friday

(I haven't had a good long walk all week. I have to get out this weekend!)

Friday check in: beautiful days, ladder stars, the stash report, OMG from With Strings Attached

Halloween sky: quarter moon
We had an extraordinary run of beautiful weather this week -- temperatures in the low 70's, abundant sunshine.
It was ideal for trick-or-treating on Monday (we had about 25 kids).

The AAUW Reflections on Reading book group met outside on Wednesday.  [Yes, I will write a Books of the Week post soon.]

Zinnias are still in bloom in the garden at the library.  (Will that bud at the lower right get to flower?)

And it was shirt-sleeves on my lakefront walks. (True, a flannel shirt. But still!)

Friday check in: meeting Edith + a finish! from With Strings Attached

Costume designer Edith Head visited the Clara Cummings Book Club luncheon on Thursday.  Martina Mathisen gave an interesting and informative portrayal. Head was awarded 8 Oscars over the span of her 60-year career, mostly with Paramount and later with Universal.

In the studio:   it's a finish!

Here is Spare Parts V.   72 x 80.  I estimate 8 yards used.

Last week I posted photos of the border/sashing I was considering. I searched further and found this gold batik. It's a Christmassy print (pinecones and sort-of poinsettias) that I got when we were on vacation in northern Minnesota ...

Friday check in: a quilt show from With Strings Attached

The Southport Quilters (Kenosha) and the Women's Journeys in Fiber (Chicago) joined their annual shows at the  Anderson Arts Centeron the Kenosha lakefront.  I went up on Wednesday afternoon.

This bright crumb quilt has a wonderful scrappy pieced back.
The quilts on the upper right are meant to be shown as a pair. One makes the other look out of focus, on purpose.

A charming vintage rescue.
Women's Journeys in Fiber had the theme Pathways: Dream Explore Discover.  Some of the pieces are quilted and others are, well, fiber.

As Libby once said, local shows are especially ...

Friday check in: a few flowers, Ado Annie, and OMG declaration from With Strings Attached

This praying mantis was on the wall along the front walk at the library yesterday.

In the library garden:  end-of-season zinnias (Zion's official flower) surround a rose.  Colder weather came in last evening.

# # # # #

I've concluded that I am the Ado Annie of fabric -- I can't say no! At Wednesday's guild meeting Barb gave me a big bag with more of Dorothy's fabric.  (Mostly FQs and a few half yards this time.) 36 yards by weight.

There are a few blocks, too.

Friday check in: the geese are flying, and the stash report from With Strings Attached

I went to Joann's, Hobby Lobby, and two quilt shops to find a print that I liked for the Christmas Geese borders.  (I'd hope to find more of the green check (Lori Holt). The first shop had it  in a lovely turquoise but not green.)  I was pleased and relieved to find the red print (Moda) at the second LQS.  I bought the 1-3/4 yards that was left on the bolt.  It turned out to be a tricky-to-match diagonal.  After some fiddly cutting I managed to piece the lengths required.

   72 x 80, 6 yards by weight ...

Friday check in: welcome autumn! vintage finds, OMG all set, and something new from With Strings Attached

It's gotten so that if I don't take a good walk at least every other day I really feel it! This week we went to Sedge Meadow/Des Plaines River Trail and Illinois Beach / Camp Logan.

Top: compass flower, snakeroot, false Solomon's Seal (b.erries). Center: goldenrod, fungi, riverbank grapes. Bottom: white heath aster and skyblue aster, New England aster, butterfly weed (can you see how the spent stems make a whorl?).

A blue-eyed bunny for the September Rabbit Rabbit good luck charm.  (I do remember to say it first thing on the first of the month.)

Stash report:

August fabric in: 99 yards, $15 (I got some great gifts)

August fabric out:  26-1/4

YTD fabric in: 1520-5/8, $8.70.  That's $1.86/yard.  (Imagine if I'd paid today's going price (say, $13/yd) -- $19,760!)   Remember, I've gotten several destashes in 2022.

YTF fabric out: 146.

Friday check in: it's not Ohio star from With Strings Attached

After the four-patch homespuns (see Wednesday's post) I still had a box of 4.5" homespun squares. I also had a heap of homespun scraps.  I found several yards of cream muslin.   I used the homespun and the muslin to make a bunch of 3.5" hourglass units.

Sure, I could put them in a box to stew for a while. Maybe a long, long while.  Instead I recalled a magazine pattern from years ago called "It's Not Ohio Star!"

This is the initial layout.  (I thought about using 3.5" nine-patches instead of the 3.5" squares ...
